August 1st Core Algorithm Change and how it can affect you

Google Core Algorithm Change - what should you know?

On August 1, 2018 Google rolled out, as many sources have reported, one of the biggest core updates ever seen. The update took place throughout a period of one week, but the peak was detected around August 1st and 2nd.

A lot of websites were strongly affected within all Verticals (temperatures for all of them on August 1st showed more that 100°). However the most affected of them all seems to be the Health and Medical sector (with the temperature reaching 124°), as it can be seen looking at MozCast Temperatures for August 1st:

MozCast Temperatures for Aug 1st

Google called the update a "broad core algorithm" and explained that there is nothing that the affected parties can do at the moment, besides focusing on providing a great experience to the visitors: "There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages."

Google on Algorithm Change on Aug 1st

So what should and can be done?

The best thing to do at the moment is to give it some time. The core updates are normally followed by some smaller "refreshes" coming from Google, so it's best to wait for these and see what needs to be done.

If your site was affected by the algorithm change, you may want to have a look at the websites that rank high after the update and compare them to your website. The differences you will find might be what changed in the algorithm after the update.

What changes can you expect in your SiteAttention tool?

At this point, as we've mentioned above, it is best not to take any sudden actions. We are therefore carefully observing the situation and are constantly in touch with the experts in the SEO world to ensure we are on top of the situation. We will let you know in case any change to the rules will be applied.

7 reasons why you need to focus on long tail keywords NOW!

What are long tail keywords?

Long tail keywords are several-word-long phrases that are more specific than a keyword. Even though they usually get lower amount of monthly searches than the keyword they base on, they target readers that are closer to the point of purchase, meaning their conversion rate is higher than in case of a one-word-long keyword. Below, we've gathered all the most crucial reasons why long tail keywords should be prioritised in your next SEO and SEM strategy.

The reasons why you should start using long tail keywords

1. Long tail keywords are easier to rank for - less competitive environment

It's very hard to rank for one-word keywords. They are more general, meaning that not only your closest competitors will want to target them. E.g. if you'd target a keyword "wedding", not only wedding planners would be interested in using this keyword but also everybody from bakers, caterers, hotels, hairdressers, churches to gift shops and wedding dress designers. However if you start brainstorming your way through some extra words you can add to the base ("wedding") to make it more specifically describe what you do, you can get rid of all the extra (and totally unnecessary!) competition! What baker would care to use "planning a beach wedding ceremony" as their target phrase? Another advantage is, that maybe even your competitor won't think of targeting the exact phrase you came up with - with long tail keywords there are millions of variations - work on the ones that will best target your audience!

2. The growing influence of voice search

More and more people nowadays decide to use voice searches in their everyday lives. When doing a voice search, we tend to be quite specific and the amount of words we use to search for something with this method is usually longer than what we would write down in the google search box. The longer the sentence, the more specific it gets. The more specific the search the more Google will prioritise your long tail keywords over some short ones, to find the most specific answer for the search.

3. Readers know what they want

When a person searches for more specific (longer) phrases, it usually means that they are further in their decision-making stage than they would be, searching for a single keyword. E.g. searching for "sports shoes" I am probably right in the beginning of my search for what new shoes to buy. If I search for "Nike Air black shoes women" I am further in my search as I've already decided on the kind of shoe I'm looking for. This way, if your website offers the shoes I'm looking for, I might consider buying them from you.

4. It is how people search on Google

How many times a day do you search for something on Google? In how many of these searches do you only write one word? It doesn't happen to often? Does it? These days, everybody knows that when your phrase is too general you can't find the answers you are looking for (at least not as easily). The more specific you are with your search phrase the more precise answers you get. The more precise long tail keywords you include on your page, the more in depth your content gets, and so you are able to answer these searches looking for more in depth information.

5. Google cares about long tail keywords

Everybody who wants their SEO to get better should first and foremost listen to the biggest search engine player there is - of course I'm talking about Google. They are the masters of the internet search and by listening to what they focus on and adding these to our SEO strategy, we will surely achieve the most. Google focuses on long tail keywords more and more by e.g. strengthening long tail keywords search results. They confirmed that with their Hummingbird update, with which they started focusing even more on understanding the context of the searches and adjusting their algorithms to more often match the exact phrasings.

6. It's cheaper to advertise for

The advertising costs of targeting long tail keywords, due to lower competition and lower monthly searches, are cheaper. But don't let the latter discourage you - the monthly searches might be lower, but their value gets much higher. As I've mentioned above, the people who search for such specific topic, are much closer to their buyers decision, so the chance of them converting to a customer is much higher.

7. They help you in being more creative with your posts

Long tail keywords are a great help in adding extra value to your articles. Thousands of people can write (usually very similar) articles about "toys for dogs", so the chance of your article being noticed is low. Now imagine you write an article about "toys for blind dogs" - by adding this extra value to your article, you can cater to a very specific niche. This way, your article will get less direct competition and - even though it caters to a smaller group of people -it will probably get more attention!

How to optimise your website for mobile and why it's super important!

Mobile phones are a huge part of our everyday lives. We can't imagine our lives without them but so many of us still create websites that are not mobile friendly. In this article you will learn how to make sure your website is mobile friendly and where to start optimizing it for mobile users.

Why is mobile optimisation so important?

With the majority Google searches being done from mobile devices (58% mobile and 42% desktop - close to 6 out of 10 people uses mobile devices to search for information) it is easy to realise how important it is for our websites to be well-prepared for mobile visitors.

With Google prioritising Mobile Optimisation more and more in their algorithm, being prepared for mobile visitors is becoming even more crucial for websites' owners. Why is that? Putting it shortly, your website might soon go down in Google searches, if you don't make sure it's well-optimised for mobile users.

The reasons above should be enough to make you realise that it's time to change a thing or two on your website to make your visitors happy and your Google ranks go up! Here are a few tips on how to make sure your website is ready for mobile:

Responsive Design

The very core of any mobile-optimised website must be a responsive design. You could of course still use other solutions, like e.g. using two different URLs linking to the same page - one of them being the mobile version and one the desktop one, but it's an old solution and it's proved to bring many SEO issues.

With responsive design, your website will change its content and layout accordingly to the device it's seen on.

It's the most advanced solution in the way that it's highly user-friendly, it doesn't require any double-links and is also causing the least SEO problems.

 Page speed

A very important factor that makes your website more mobile-friendly is the speed in which your pages load. If it takes them too long to load all the content, Google will down-grade your page, because who likes to wait for some content to open? Especially when they sit on the bus to work and need fast entertainment - they will not choose something that will take half a minute to load.

It is recommended by Google for the site load speed to be under a second! Yeap - it sounds tough and it can be pretty hard to implement! Here are a few tips on what tools to use to make the process a little easier.

Try using some website performance-checking tools such as Google PageSpeed Insights, Google Chrome DevTools (Google Lighthouse), Pingdom etc.

All you need to do at this point is to run one of the above mentioned tests. When the test results are ready, you will also get some personalized suggestions on what should be worked on, in order to make your website faster. Try to implement as many of these tips as possible. These websites will help you analyze and improve. Amongst others they will help you with: finding large-size images that can be converted to other, smaller in size formats; checking if you have render-blocking JavaScript; Testing Time to First Byte and much, much more.

Run another test at the end to see what difference your actions made.

What to look at when designing for mobile users?

Mobile phone have much more limited screen space compared to desktops. Have that in mind when designing your website. Here are a few things you should keep in mind:

1. Keep your text easily readable by making the font bigger. Nobody likes pinching their way through a long article!

2. Don't use Flash, as not all the mobile users will be able to see your content in that format. Instead create fun content in HTML5.

3. Make sure your header photos are not too large. Large images force users too scroll through the screen more in order to even get to the part they often came for in the first place - the written information.

4. Keep your pages' design clean by leaving a lot of negative space between each of your paragraphs. It makes the pages easier to read and the reader won't feel too overwhelmed by the amount of text you want them to read. This "lighter" look is extremely important when looking at the page on a mobile phone. Without any white spaces the page looks very unwelcoming and many readers will give up and leave after a few seconds.

5. Use your page space wisely - keep your text and titles to the point and try not to make them too long - the longer they get the more precious space they take on the small mobile screens.

6. Make sure the sizes of your buttons are the right size for mobile users. They shouldn't be too small, as it will often be hard for users to click on the button they intend to. They should also not be too big, as then it's very easy to just accidentally hit the button and e.g. be transferred to another page - this can put off some users and make them not want to continue reading your page.

7. Don't be afraid to use headings or make important parts of the page bold - it's more noticeable on a smaller screen. It also gives a nicer, more reader-friendly look, as you can find the part you're interested in much faster.

8. Be careful with adding pop-ups to your pages. They are usually quite easy to close when they open during a computer search, but can be a nightmare when searching from a mobile device. Many users might not have the patience to close the pop-up and instead will just exit your website.

What Are Keywords and Why Are They So Important For Your Traffic?

What are keywords and why are they so important for your traffic?

Have you just started your journey with SEO, are bombarded by phrases you don't know the meaning of, and have no idea where to start learning what it's all about? Well, good news - you found the right article! In this article you will learn everything you should know about keywords - what they are, how to search for them and how to prioritise them - all of this will help you can get more traffic to your website. SEO doesn't have to be hard!

What is a keyword?

Keyword is a word or a phrase that should be included in your page's content, to help search engines such as Google, match your page with people searching for similar queries.

Coming up with keywords, you need to have your target audience in mind. Think of what they might be searching for answers to and match it with the topic of your page's content. Keyword should both: describe your page's content and be a word or a phrase that your audience will look for.

Keywords can be both: short, consisting of only one word, e.g. gardening, or long phrases, that go more in-depth with the topic e.g. gardening tools for seniors.

Why are keywords important (why should I use them)?

Well thought-through keyword strategy combined with SEO-optimized pages can drive massive amount of traffic to your website.

Including keywords in your content allows Google and other search engines to understand what your page is about and match it with people who search for topics similar to the one of your page. Keywords can drive quality traffic to your page, since people who search for phrases similar to the ones included in your page's content are automatically interested in the topic you write about.

How to search for keywords?

If your company doesn't have a keyword strategy you can develop your own. Here are some tips on how to come up with the most beneficial keywords for your company in no time without using complicated tools!

Which keywords should I choose?

First and foremost, make sure your topics (and therefore also your keywords) are connected to the main area your website is about. So if your website is all about gardening, your topics should be concentrated around that area - this makes Google realise that you’re an expert in gardening. Therefore Google might prioritise your page over others using the same keywords, if the other ones come from websites not as strictly connected to gardening.

Having that in mind, you can still probably easily come up with hundreds of keywords that would fit within gardening. So how do you, having a list of a hundred different keywords, choose the ones that you should prioritise? By looking at their Average Monthly Searches amount and Competition Rate. To see these factors, you can use many different tools available for free online. The most well known one is Google Keyword Planner (but you can use anything from SEMrush to SiteAttention). You should try to find the keywords that have the highest number of monthly searches and the lowest competition rate. That means that they are often searched for on Google and at the same time are not popular within your competitors.

Another good strategy will be to choose some long-tail keywords (keywords that consist of a few words). These are more descriptive, so it often means that the person who searches for them, specifically knows what they are looking for - such person will be more likely to go on your page and actually read the full article, than people who search for very general phrases. E.g. somebody searching for “gardening” might be looking for anything from gardening tools to plants that like shade. When somebody searches for “best gardening tools for seniors”, the case is quite clear that they want to buy some gardening tools which would be easy to handle for seniors. Long-tail keywords will get less monthly searches, but they  usually also mean less competition and more targeted = interested in the topic traffic.

Going in depth...

To prepare a good keyword strategy you should remember to categorize the keywords you've chosen into the buyers' journey. Think of what kind of topic will a person look for when researching the topic for the first time, what will they search for when they go more in depth with it, and what will they want to know before and after the purchase. You need to make sure that all of these categories are covered with the most relevant for each of them keywords. This way you can keep attracting readers to come back and learn more from you.

The Only Keyword Research Guide a Writer Will Ever Need

Your content is not always as popular as it should be? You spend a lot of time researching the topics you write about and writing good-quality, in-depth, reader-friendly content, but your pages still rank far from Google's top 10 and barely anybody gets to read them? Maybe it's time to focus more on the keywords you're using! And it doesn't have to take you half a day. With this guide you will learn how to find the best and most beneficial for your website keywords and do so in no time. Let's get started!

What are keywords and why are they important?

Keywords are words or phrases that people search for in search engines, like Google. Ranking higher on Google means that your page gets higher up in the Google search results. Ideally, it should appear on the first page of Google search, when somebody looks for the keyword you optimize your page for. It's important to drive the right traffic to your website. That means, that you have to have your targeted audience in mind, while coming up with your keywords.

How to look for keywords?

Now that we know what to look for, where do we look for it? There are many places online that can help you with finding the right keywords. Let's start from the very basics:

Check the competitors' websites

What are your competitors using that you are not, that make them rank higher on Google? It's easy to check - simply visit their website and look for keywords that your potential customers would search for. You can identify interesting keywords everywhere from the homepage, navigation bar, all the way to their blog posts.

Think of how far they expand their topics to catch your targeted audience's attention. Are they only using keywords directly linking towards your industry? Or maybe also target your audiences' lifestyle or their struggles at work?

Let's say my business is all about gardening and one of my biggest competitors is Gardening Know How. As soon as I go on their website, I can start looking for good keywords and topics I could write about. I can look at the categories in their main menu, then go further in depth and scroll down each of the pages, looking for some good keywords related to gardening. Going even further, I get to their blog and look at the sub-categories in the blog menu. Looking through your competitor's blog posts and brainstorming what topics (related to what they already talk about) they are missing is also a great strategy. People will start looking for answers at your competitor's blog, but when they go further in depth, they will need more information and that's when they can find your blog post!

keyword research for SEO

Google search

Try writing down your keyword in Google search and instead of clicking on a Search button, focus on the suggestions that Google displays below. The displayed suggestions are the ones that people search for most often when looking for information connected to your keyword. That's a super simple and fast tip that can really help with coming up with some popular topics to write about. You can even take it a step further and build on the keywords you've found in the first round of search. E.g. in the first round I write down a word "gardening". Then among Google suggestions I find "gardening tools". Instead of writing about gardening tools, I take it for a second round and see what Google suggestions are for "gardening tools". In this round I find out that people often search for "gardening tools for seniors", so now I can write about e.g. "10 most useful gardening tools for seniors" or "best brands of gardening tools for seniors" or "5 gardening tools seniors love".

Keyword research on Google

Buzzsumo

Look for inspiration on Buzzsumo. Simply write a phrase relevant for your industry and see what kind of articles with that phrase in the title are trending the most. This can not only help you with the keywords and phrases you should use to get more traffic to your website, but also show you some new approaches you can take to keep your audience entertained. E.g. if you only write articles with tips on gardening and reviews of different gardening tools, looking at Buzzsumo, you can notice that writing about interesting social cases can be an interesting read for your audience as well.

Remember to check the amount of shares on Social Media, before picking one of the articles. Also have a look at the Evergreen Score - the higher the score the longer the article has been performing well online. A topic similar to a topic of an article with a high Evergreen Score will keep sending people to your website throughout a longer period.

Using-Buzzsumo-for-Keyword-Research

Google trends

With Google trends you can check when different topics within your industry trend the most. E.g. searching for "gardening", we can see that the topic starts trending with the beginning of spring and slowly becomes less popular by the end of summer. Then, however Google trends show a rise in searches for "winter garden". That's why it's important to know when to write about which topic, since in some cases it can significantly improve the amount of traffic streaming to your website.

Google AdWords / Keyword Planner

Get an account on Google Adwords and start using keyword planner - it's a great tool that helps you in finding new alternatives to the keywords you've already came up with. To start using keyword planner simply click on the "tools" icon when on your AdWords account and choose "Keyword Planner" from the "Planning" tools list. Then simply insert some of your keywords and the Keyword Planner will give you some suggestions of what other words people look for, that would be useful in your keyword strategy.

Instead of inserting some of your keywords, you can also add your competitor's domain in the search box. Now, Keyword Planner will show you the keywords related to your competitor's website!

Using-Buzzsumo-for-Keyword-Research

SEMrush

You can use SEMrush to spy on your competition some more. Simply write down their domain name in SEMrush tool and you can see the keywords they score for, the money they spend on online advertising and the position in the Google rank they have for each of the keywords. Try to find keywords that your competitors don't rank high for, that would fit your business perfectly.

How to use SEMrush to find keywords

SiteAttention

While using the SiteAttention plugin, after inserting your keyword, you can use the "keyword helper" tool to check which other keywords would be worth targeting. Compare the monthly searches (the more the better) and check the bar for how popular your keyword is among your competitors (the more popular the worse). Pick the words with the best ratio between the high monthly searches and the lowest popularity among your competitors.

Building a Keyword Research Document

Now that you know where to discover keyword opportunities, you need to think about how you will prioritise and keep track of these. The easiest way to do this is via an excel spreadsheet or Google Sheet. This will allow you to group keywords together on different tabs in line with your business or products.

The example below comes from Jellyfish Training. You can access their Keyword Research template here.
